Sailing and (Kite) Surfing on the Achensee
The TWV-Achensee is one of the biggest sailing clubs in Austria. It is the home club of internationally known elite sailors and organises prestigious national and international regattas.
The reason why the Achsensee is so beloved of sailing enthusiasts is because of its ideal wind conditions. During normal fine weather conditions a thermal lift develops from the light southerly winds (Force 1 -2 on the Beaufort Scale) in the mornings and the powerful northerly winds (Force 3-5 on the Beaufort Scale) in the afternoons as they pass between the towering peaks of the Karwendel Mountains to the West and the Rofan and the Unnütz in the East.
The Föhn phenomenon in the spring brings b southerly winds with it which are squally and gusty. In conditions like these expert sailors and surfers are really in their element. Sailing is a sport which requires strength and stamina as well as good co-ordination and clear thinking. These requirements make it the ideal sport for children and young adults. The conditions on the Achsensee also make it the ideal place to learn sailing, surfing or kite surfing.
